09 Jan Put Yourself First
It’s the indulgence that determines how you will feel when your feet hit the floor in the morning. It’s the one you see in the mirror every time you get dressed.
It’s the one that your life depends on.
It’s not really an indulgence at all, but you treat it like one.
Somehow the idea of ‘taking care of yourself’ has become a luxury; something that only happens when there is extra time in the day, when everything else that needs to be done for everyone else – is done.
It feels indulgent to take time out of your day to go to the gym.
It feels indulgent to take a yoga class while the nanny is at home watching your kid.
It feels indulgent to spend money on trainer to come to your house because it’s the only way you’ll actually show up for it.
Sure we want to make showing up at the gym feel luxurious, because it keeps us coming back. But there is a difference between making the experience feel luxurious, and labeling the whole category as a luxury.
And it’s not about the money.
It’s about the negotiability.
When taking care of yourself becomes a luxury, you become a negotiable.
Stop making yourself negotiable.
Go ahead and take that yoga class in the middle of the day. Go ahead and get that deep tissue massage that you so desperately need. Go ahead and tell your boss that you can’t come in to work early on Friday because you have a workout to do (and don’t make up an excuse).
Indulge in your health.
It is, after all, the only thing that will truly keep you alive.
